               What is Math Pals?       

 
Math Pals is a peer tutoring program that has two goals:
 
1.  To increase student learning in the area of number recognition and basic Math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) by providing individualized instruction in an active learning environment.
 
2.  To incorporate service opportunity and significant learning experiences into the program for the tutors. 
 
When is Math Pals?
 
Tutoring sessions will occur weekly from 7:20 - 7:45.
Tutors should be at school by 7:15 AM.
 
Who attends Math Pals?
 
Students are recommended by their teachers for the Math Pal program. 
Tutors are volunteers.
 
What happens at Math Pals?
 
The students involved in this project meet one to two mornings a week before school in the school library to work with a peer tutor on math facts. They will be involved in a myriad of differentiated activities to increase their Math fact internalization. Their "Math Pal" will choose from many activities/games geared to learning numbers and/or math facts. These activities/games include but are not limited to Math Bingo, Fact Quiz Cubes, Snap It Up, Quizmo, Math & Match, Math Dash, Factor Frenzy, Clever Catch Math Fact balls, Multiplication Dominoes, computer activities and card and dice games. 
 
What is the benefit to Tutorees?
  • Increases mastery of math academic skills
  • Increases amount of individual instruction
  • Receives emotional support and positive role models
  • Increased amount of praise, feedback, and encouragement given
  • Skills are demonstrated instead of just verbalized
  • Closer monitoring (from teacher and tutor) that maximizes time on task
  • Opportunity for companionship
What is the benefit to Tutors?
  • Improves students’ attitudes toward school
  • Provides emotional support and a positive role model for tutorees
  • Increases sense of pride and accomplishment for having helped someone else
  • A greater sense of dedication to their own instruction
  • Increases self-esteem, confidence, and sense of adequacy
  • Helps them to develop empathy for tutorees for whom learning may be much more of a struggle
  • Provides a sense of service to community

Who moderates the program?

  • Math Pals is moderated by Mrs. Bieg
  • Special thanks to Ms. Vogler, Mrs. Zimmers and Mrs. Puettmann who help with supervision.
